FEMA DECKS, POOLS, & ACCESSORY STRUCTURES GUIDELINES
I am really impressed with FEMA's goal of providing strict standards for coastal area construction. The standards are designed to help withstand major windy rain conditions, and these same standards can be applied to homes in northern Utah to ensure that water does not enter into the structure of the home. Homes built in our windy canyons, South Mountain in Draper, or Traverse Mountain in Lehi could all benefit from the following flashing details.

PLEASE NOTE: Look at the image below and imagine if every deck was built freestanding instead of hanging to the home by a ledger board and a few bolts. Deck collapses would be a tragedy of the past instead of daily news.
