A Cape Canaveral man injured after his weather-worn, second-story balcony collapsed was in good condition today as authorities planned to inspect other units in the townhouse complex, officials said.
The incident happened about 9:30 a.m. Sunday after Joseph Reisinger stepped out onto the wood-frame balcony of his residence on the 7900 block of Ridgewood Avenue.
The wood beams gave way, causing him to tumble about 12 feet to the ground, said Capt. Brian Dennison of the Cape Canaveral Fire Department. Reisinger was then airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne as a precaution, Dennison said.
A city building official was also called out to the apartment complex to inspect the structure.
"Basically the fasteners for the balcony had rusted and sheered," said Todd Morley, a building official with Cape Canaveral.
Morley posted several notices on three other units in the complex after finding that those balconies were also unsafe and in a deteriorated condition.
"We're going to work with the property owners. We know this could be expensive with a full replacement being $3,000 to $4,000," Morley said.
Code enforcement officers were expected to talk to the property owners this afternoon.
